Filing
Can I still file prior year tax returns (tax year 2006, tax year 2007)?
Yes. Click the Get Started button and select the appropriate tax year..
Will I be charged penalties and interest if I file late?
Yes, if you have a balance owing, you will be charged penalties and interest. The penalty for late payment is 5% of your balance owing for the tax year, plus 1% of your balance owing for each full month that your return is late, to a maximum of 12 months. Your late-filing penalty may be higher if you were charged a late-filing penalty on a return for any of the three previous years.

When can I file my tax return electronically?
The CRA NETFILE service is available from February 9 until September 30, 2009 for the 2008 tax filing year. To find out if you're eligible, check for your personalized access code on the mailing label of your annual tax return package. If you have not received a tax package, or if there is no access code visible, contact the NETFILE Help Desk at 1 800 714-7257 to have one assigned one to you.
The Revenu Québec's NetFile Québec service is available from mid February until June 30 for each tax filing year. If you are eligible for NetFile Québec but did not receive an access code, you can call any Revenu Québec service centre at 1 866 802-6294. An access code will be assigned to you immediately over the phone, or you can request one online.
How do I send my supporting documents when filing my tax returns electronically to the CRA or Revenu Québec using their NETFILE service?
When you file your tax return through NETFILE, you do not have to submit your receipts, information slips or other supporting papers. It is your responsibility to keep this material safe and available in case the CRA or Revenu Québec request at a later date to see supporting documentation.
What is NETFILE?
NETFILE is the CRA's and Revenu Québec's electronic tax-filing option. This program allows you to file your income tax and benefit returns using the Internet. The CRA will begin accepting returns via NETFILE on February 9, 2009. The Revenu Québec NetFile begins mid February each year.
Some restrictions apply. For information about NETFILE, visit the CRA Web site. For information about NetFile Québec, visit the Revenu Québec Web site.
What if I discover a mistake after I've filed?
You can't use NETFILE to change your tax return, nor should you resubmit another entire tax return. You should send a letter to your tax centre requesting an adjustment to your return, or you can complete CRA's T1 Adjustment Request (T1ADJ), to request the change.
Upon sending in a letter, provide your name, address, and social insurance number, and indicate the tax years to be adjusted. Also, because the CRA wouldn't have received any paper documents with your NETFILE return, include the receipts and supporting documents for the original claim and the changes you want to make. For example, if you want to claim an additional charitable donation, you have to submit all charitable donation receipts, not just the receipt(s) for the additional amount.
Is my data kept private and secure?
Yes. We take seriously the privacy of your personal data, especially that information you provide for the specific purpose of preparing your tax return. We encourage you to review our Privacy Policy that summarizes your rights and our duties to guard your personal data against unauthorized or impermissible use or access by anyone, including Intuit.
Tax return information is collected in a secure session, which means that we use respected industry standards to protect your tax return information against unauthorized or impermissible use or access.

Are there restrictions on the types of tax returns that I NETFILE?
You can prepare most kinds of tax returns using QuickTax. However, you cannot use QuickTax to electronically file over the Internet using NETFILE, if:
- You have self-employment income and filed an election to change your fiscal year-end to December 31
- You are filing a non-resident tax return
- It is your first Canadian income tax return
Note that QuickTax does not set any restrictions on the electronic filing of tax returns to the CRA or the Revenu Québec. However, there are NETFILE restrictions imposed by the CRA as well as NetFile Québec restrictions imposed by the Revenu Québec.
