I think I made a mistake. Can I still go back and change some information?
Yes. Providing you have not filed your tax return, you can return to any section and make changes at any time. Simply click on the section in the progress bar you wish to visit, then select the desired step. You will be sent to that step to make your edits.
What if I discover a mistake after I've filed?
Once you have filed your tax return, CRA will not permit you to make changes over the Internet using their NETFILE service. Unfortunately, you must send a letter to your tax centre requesting an adjustment to your return, or you can complete CRA's T1 Adjustment Request (T1ADJ), to request the change.
If you send a letter, provide your name, address, and social insurance number, and indicate the tax years to be adjusted. Since your return was filed over the Internet, the CRA wouldn't have received any paper documents with your NETFILE return. Therefore, you should include any receipts and supporting documents for the original claim and the changes you want to make. For example, if you want to claim an additional charitable donation, you have to submit all charitable donation receipts, not just the receipt(s) for the additional amount.
How do I know when to enter total amounts and when to enter details in my tax return?
QuickTax's EasyStep Interview walks you through your tax return, performs the calculations, and identifies and completes all of the relevant forms you need. Just pull together your slips and receipts, and answer "yes" or "no" questions as they appear on screen. QuickTax will do the rest.
Once you've answered all the EasyStep questions, QuickTax reviews the information to ensure it's accurate. QuickTax has built-in double checks that will flag any deductions missed or entries that need clarification.
What happens to my tax file after I have filed?
Information you enter into QuickTax is securely stored on Intuit's servers. The tax service along with your information will be available until December 2009 after which all information will be deleted from our servers. Your data from one year can be used in the next year as carry-forward information, which will be used to start your return. Our data centre operates under strict security guidelines to protect your information. In addition, extensive backup systems guard against data loss.
For security reasons, we cannot retrieve your personal or tax information for you, including your password. Only you have access to your tax return. This ensures total privacy and security in preparing and saving your tax returns. Therefore, we recommend you print a PDF copy of your tax return for your files prior to December 2009. You can also download your tax file (.q07) to your hard drive. This allows you to read your tax information with the relevant year of QuickTax, or to carry forward data into the following year's version of QuickTax. After you've saved copies of your tax file, you can delete your tax return from our servers.
Is my password case-sensitive?
Yes. You can use any combination of upper and lower case characters to create your password and this exact combination must be used when using your password in the future.
What if I lose my username or password?
For security reasons, we cannot retrieve your password for you. Therefore, only you have access to your tax return. If you cannot remember your password when you log in, just click "Need a Hint" for assistance. We'll show a hint or clue to your password that might trigger your memory. If you still can't remember, you will have to start a new tax return by logging in using a new username. This ensures total privacy and security in preparing and saving your tax return.
Please note: you should never use a hint that will give away your password to others. It should be subtle enough that only you will be able to determine your password. If, after the hint, you still can't remember your password, you'll need to start a new return.
Should I file my return electronically?
If you are eligible for NETFILE, it is a good idea to file using this method for several reasons:
Shorter processing time: The CRA can process your tax return almost immediately and send your refund much faster, if applicable. If CRA already has your direct deposit information, your refund should be deposited into your account within two weeks of filing.
Greater control: The CRA verifies returns submitted via NETFILE immediately. If there are errors, they will be presented to you on the NETFILE Web site. You can then return to QuickTax to correct your errors and retransmit your return on the NETFILE Web site.
Proof of receipt: The acknowledgement page you get from the CRA is your proof of receipt, and it comes to you immediately after using their NETFILE service. You can save this page on your own hard drive.
Hassle Free: You don't have to bother sorting out and separating all your slips and receipts prior to submitting your return to the CRA. Please note that it is your responsibility to keep slips and receipts in a secure location in case the CRA does ask to see them.
No mail: There is no need to bother with envelopes, stamps or postal delays. This saves you time, money and energy.
